TRADE SALES - STEVE SKARPARIS

We have reported a 40 per cent increase in sales of chai latte after developing our own blend to suit Australian tastes.  Our two chai powders, spice and vanilla, have soared over the past year, with around a tonne of the products being sold every three months.  Not everyone wants to drink coffee, so people are trying chai and realising it’s a little bit different.

Chai is quite unusual and you’ve got to acquire a taste for it, but people are becoming more adventurous with their drinks.  Chai has gone from something which sat on the shelves as an extra product to a mainstream product for us.  Chai is a spice milk tea which originated in India and is made with a mixture of aromatic spices and herbs.  Aromas have adapted our chai powders, which include cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and honey powder, to suit the Australian marketplace.

We have made our spice chai a lot more subtle and reduced the potency of the spices to suit Australian tastes instead of using generic imported blends from other parts of the world.  We also reduced the sugar content, so it doesn’t carry the calories of the American chais, and made the vanilla flavour stronger in the vanilla chai.  Judging by the we are selling I think we’ve hit the mark. We sell nearly a tonne every three months, which is a lot of chai.  Vanilla is Aroma’s biggest chai latte seller.

Chai is now becoming part and parcel of the product range in cafes and is a very versatile drink that can be enjoyed hot or cold, or even used in smoothies and milkshakes.  Chai is simply the word for “tea” in Hindi and several other Asian languages.  You don’t need to be a trade or wholesale customer to enjoy the benefits of Chai tea either. You can purchase all of your Aromas favourites at
www.aromas.com.au and enjoy Seriously Sophisticated Tea and Coffee.

FRANCHISE - MICHAEL SOUNTAS

Hello to our newly dedicated loyal readers and welcome to our first Newsletter!

Some of you may be very familiar with Franchising, some of you may not. But to be totally honest with you, it is something that is so demographically and geographically diverse it’s difficult to pigeon hole.

Proudly our brand has been versatile enough to venture nationally and internationally. Aromas together with IHPL have opened 5 stores in India over the past 8 months. An achievement we are all very proud of.

Along with our International growth has been the celebration of two new stores in Australia. Our Franchised store at 19 Lang Parade Milton opened its doors on the 13th January and is proving to be a huge success to corporate and residents of the area. Aromas Milton is open Monday to Friday from 7am to 4pm.

Our Aromas Kirra store opened its doors on the 11th January. We found that the stores presence was generating local conversation and accolades within days of operation. Aromas Kirra was long awaited by locals since our advertising in the windows went up last September. Aromas Kirra is located on the ground level of Nirvana By the Sea, Cnr of Musgrave and Douglas Streets and is open 7 days from 7am to 4pm and late on Friday and Saturday.

If you are considering an Aromas Franchise, please contact me at franchise@aromas.com.au for more information or an application form.

OPERATIONS - ANDREW SKARPARIS

Consistency is the key to any successful brand and Aromas is no different. We ensure consistency of our coffee & tea, food products & service. Without the culmination of all of these, our brand is letting down our customers.

We know that as the number of our stores continues to grow that we can promise our loyal customers the service they deserve always, whether they are dining in Rockhampton, Milton or Pune, India.

Although you may find that our Airport locations have a slightly different menu offering to our franchises or company stores, that is because our airport stores have a seriously captive audience who are diligently catching flights and have time constraints.

However to further enhance a customers experience at an Aromas store, is the relaxed atmosphere which is shared through our dedicated team members. This atmosphere is achieved at all of our locations.

You may have noticed that our iconic Wintergarden Store has closed its doors. Due to the centre enduring a massive refurb, we decided not to renew our lease and focus on our newest store at Kirra Beach.

Kirra has a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. A place to enjoy the view and ambience with friends & family when on holidays, or if you are one of the lucky ones to live locally. We have even noticed many a business meeting lately. It’s a very special location to have a business meeting. The team at Kirra would love to meet you. So drop in and meet Darren our manager and his great team!

As marketing and communication trends change and adapt to peoples needs and wants, we found it was time to ‘keep up with the times’. The Aromas Face Book page has been a great success with over 215 fans around the country logging in daily to see what we’re up to. If you would like to become a fan please find us! We’d be happy to have you.

As you visit our stores make sure you keep an eye out for our “In store Promotions”. We change these for you every 4-6 weeks. We look forward to sharing some money saving dining experiences with you.

We pride ourselves on our ability to be attractive to many people from different walks of life during different parts of the day and through promoting our In store promotions we are able to achieve this.

Even though our brand is well recognised locally, nationally and internationally, I believe in this day and age that an I.P. (intellectual property) needs to be adaptable in many applications.

I am expressing this to you today as we celebrate the opening of our 5th store in India. Our I.P in India has changed slightly to include the cultural specifications of the Indian people. However, if you ever have the opportunity to visit this spectacular part of the world, you can be guaranteed the same superior service and seriously sophisticated tea and coffee.

Our daily philosophy is acquisition and retention. We need to acquire interest with new customers to ensure we can retain their loyal custom. It is our daily ambition to guarantee that our customers leave with positive experiences and look forward to dining with Aromas again.

If you have any questions regarding our products or stores please visit us at

THE PERFECT ESPRESSO

The perfect espresso or short black is an unforgettable coffee which leaves a most pleasant aftertaste at the back of your mouth for many minutes after you have finished. Also, the short black is the base for most of the coffees you might make. (Cappuccino, flat white, latte)

To start with, the best quality, freshest coffee beans must be used (Aromas of course).

For commercial espresso machines and grinders, we have to marry up the correct ratio of the ground coffee dose, grind, and pressure of hot water.

As a starting point, dispense your ground coffee from your grinder into a single basket group handle. Tamp down the coffee evenly so it reaches the line of the basket which sits about a half centimetre below the rim. Place the handle in the machine and time the pour of espresso for 30ml. (Use a nip measure or measuring cup). This should take around 22 to 25 seconds. If it takes less than this, adjust your grinder for a finer grind, if more, then adjust to a courser grind. After a while of making espressos, you will be able to tell the correct pour by just looking at the way the coffee comes out in a thin, velvety stream and by the beautiful, golden crema crowning your coffee.

Keep your espresso machine and handles spotlessly clean and don’t forget to always use a pre-warmed espresso cup.  For domestic espresso machines (there are so many types), you may still be able to adjust grinds and doses like mentioned above.
