Office Coffee Culture: A Happy Team is a Winning Team
Posted by Elaine Mead on 10th Sep 2019
Call it intuition, or just a really special gift,
but if you’re here checking out the blog, we’re pretty confident you’re one of the 84% of people surveyed by Staples who said they feel their day hasn’t started until they’ve had their first cup of coffee.
We’re with you, and that’s why we know that first cup has to be better than good. It has to be great.
We also know how disappointing it is when that first cup comes from a dusty jar of supermarket brand instant, that has, unfortunately, become the staple of many an office kitchen cupboard.
Not to pass judgement at all, but there is a better way.
But, hey, don’t just take our word for it. Below we’ve neatly summed up five science-backed reasons to put your heart and soul into picking the very best coffee for the office.
1. DRINKING (GOOD QUALITY) COFFEE BOOSTS PRODUCTIVITY
As we chatted about in one of our previous posts, the caffeine in coffee is a psychoactive substance, which comes with a few nifty little perks (including that wonderful hit alertness you get from your first cup in the morning!)
Caffeine is able to do this through blocking the adenosine receptors in the brain. These receptors are responsible for making us feel sleepy, and this is the primary reason we start to feel more awake once we’ve had our morning cup of joe.
It also helps increase memory recall. One study has shown that caffeine helps us to recall information more readily, for up to 24 hours after drinking it. Not bad at all!
It’s not too much of a stretch of the imagination to see how all this translates into increased productivity at your work desk. And it’s an even shorter stretch to see why it’s important to make sure the very best of coffee beans are on hand to help get the team started on a Monday (and every) morning.
2. CELEBRATING OFFICE COFFEE CULTURE IS AN INEXPENSIVE PERK
It’s easy to let the idea of providing coffee in the office seem like a simple thing that doesn’t make that much of a difference. But just take a moment to picture a world where, one fine Monday morning, your team or colleagues arrive to find there is no coffee for them.
If your picture is anything like ours, things get ugly pretty quickly.
Going back to the Staples survey we mentioned, the researchers found that one in four workers advised they would give up vacation days to keep coffee available in the office. Which tells you just how significant it is for a lot of employees!
Providing good quality coffee is a small, yet exceptionally valuable work perk. While it might not be the thing that keeps everyone happy in their jobs 100% of the time, it is a big part of a positive office culture, and well worth investing in.
3. COFFEE BREAKS ARE GREAT FOR TEAM MORALE
We all know we’re supposed to take a break from our office computer screens every 25minutes (we all knew that right?) but it’s just not really practical in the course of a busy day.
Regular breaks are of course essential for keeping ourselves healthy at work, and taking a break to have a coffee with a colleague has been proven to be even more beneficial. One study from Denmark found that co-workers who took coffee breaks together formed strong ‘coping communities’ and supported each other to cope with daily stress and pressures from their roles.
You know what isn’t good for these coping communities? A dusty jar of instant.
4. GOOD QUALITY COFFEE IS HEALTHIER
We’ve touched on this a couple of times, but coffee is naturally rich in antioxidants, which simply have too many good health benefits for us to list here.
While you might not be able to go ahead and list providing coffee as part of the office Health and Well-being manifesto (although you could), to make the most of that good stuff, it just makes sense to be investing in fresh, high-quality coffee beans.
And if you want to go all out, you might even want to consider going organic.
5. PROMOTES POSITIVE CLIENT SERVICE
Having good coffee on hand is beneficial, not only for the team, but for any office guests you might have through the door.
Coffee is a time-honoured way of providing hospitality, so it bodes well to be able to offer the very best when you do have those important clients, partners, vendors, or potential team newbies making a visit.
There’s nothing worse than scraping out some dried up granules from the bottom of the jar when you really want to impress.
